Anna-Eva Bergman was born on 29 May 1909 in Stockholm, Sweden, and died on 24 July 1987 in Grasse, France. She had come as a young artist to study in France . In 1928, she met Hans Hartung and they married on 28 September 1929. His financial situation becomes more and more precarious. Period of great discouragement. The German Embassy withdraws his passport; he remains in Paris illegally. Increasing difficulties. His wife falls seriously ill. The couple are obliged to divorce. Anna-Eva Bergman returns to live in Norway.The Hans Hartung and Anna-Eva Bergman Foundation opened in the Antibes residence (173 Chemin du Valbosquet) of the German-born abstract artist and his painter wife. The stark white villa was designed by Hartung himself, and he lived here until his death in 1989. Open to guided tours, the villa hosts mini-exhibitions of the couple's work, which are culled from some 16,000 paintings, photographs, and engravings.
