CHRISTOS CARAS (Greece, Thessaly, Trikala b. 1930 / act: Athens)

Christos Caras Christos Caras was born on 9 December 1930 at Trikala, Thessaly. He studied at the Pandios School of Political Sciences (1948-1950), but in 1951 he enrolled in the Athens School of Fine Arts - ASFA and received a diploma in 1955. From 1957 to 1960 he studied fresco painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with a grant from the Greek State Subsidy Society. There he experimented at with gestural painting and collage. Though based in Paris up to 1963, he travelled all over Europe to visit major international exhibitions. In 1973 he left Europe for New York on a Ford Foundation scholarship. He worked there for two years and had the opportunity to travel within USA and to Canada.

In 1975 Caras returned to Greece, taking an active part in his effort to forge a modern artistic trend by organizing various personal and group exhibitions, TV programs and interviews on newspapers and magazines. In 1963, together with other artists, Caras founded the group Tomi and in 1976 the Artists Union. In 1963 he participated in the organization of the first Congress of the Greek Artists of Plastic Arts, in 1977 in the symposium Establishment of a Contemporary Art Museum in Greece and in 1981 in the symposium Contemporary Art and Tradition.

Cara's work has been extensively analysed by Efi Feredinou in 1975 in her treatise Caras: Paintings from 1960 to 1975 and by Emmanuel Mavromatis in 1982 in his treatise Plastic-shape Differentiations in the Paintings of Christos Caras 1959-1963, 1976-1982. Numerous articles about his work have been published by Greek and foreign art critics on newspapers and magazines.

Caras currently lives and works in Athens.
