Iannis Falkonis was born on 10 February 1967 in Lefkada Island, Greece. He engaged with painting from his early youth. He studied photography at AKTO Art & Design in Athens (1989-1990), following courses by Alkis Xanthakis, Sarantos Sakelakos, Costas Balafas and Spyros Meletzis, graduating with honors. Then he studied cinema and television at Prova School of Athens (2001) direction with George Petrides, editing with Elias Sgouropoulos, script with Mariliz Ritsardi, photography with Andreas Zacharatos and acting with Sotiris Tsogkas and Mary Razi. He attended photography seminars by Larry Towell ("best photographer in the world", 1993), Hasselbland in Thessaloniki, and Platon Rivelli etc. He also had the chance to meet the leading Greek photographer Nelly's and the artistic photographer Elite.
Falkonis attended seminars on the work of Theo Angelopoulos by the cinema historian Irini Stathi and lectures by the director himself and others contributors in his work - Petros Markaris, Eleni Karaindrou, Vassilis Rafailidis, Vangelis Kazan, Eva Kotamanidou and Yannis Soldatos. He also attended a seminar of the European Documentary Network by Professor Tue Steen Muller in Athens, and lectures by directors of documentaries Constantine Maros and Roviros Manthoulis, the Academician Costas Georgousopoulos, the art historian Manos Stefanidis etc.
Falkonis has made seven personal exhibitions and has participated in twenty-one group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He has directed the following documentaries: Niochori (?); Sikelianos: The Greek Angel (?); Dolphins and People (?); The Garden of the Poet (?); The Dancer (?); and Roviros Manthoulis in Lefkada: The Birth of Greek Documentary (?). As a photographer he has covered Greek and international issues (Cannes Film Festival, Venice; World Championship Formula 1, Moto GP, Superbike, Rally, track, basketball, weightlifting, concerts, film shooting, etc.) Photos by Falkonis are published in books and magazines. He has also received awards in competitions of FUJI (1993) and the newspaper Ta Nea (1998).
Falkonis is a member of the Greek Photographic Society - EFE, the Foundation of the Hellenic World and the European Documentary Network - EDN. He has created and maintains one of the largest collections of original photographs, books, documents and archival material for Angelos and Eva Sikelianos, while retaining the richest photographic archive for the history of Lefkada.
