DN: Sandra R. Fourlis is interested in what she calls 'social expressionism' - the represention of social activities in an expressionistic manner. In other words, she is inspired by things that happen around us. The present work is from a group of 10 drawings of 2009 entitled "Cell Phone Mania". This idea came out of her observation that nowadays people are obsessed with telephonic communication. In this series Fourlis represents women in different positions talking on the phone anywhere, like on the street or the beach. Here a young woman in the nude on the beach is conversing on the phone. The palette of colors she uses is influenced by her experience in printmaking. The work begins with an automatic application of expressionistic color in the background. Whatever she relates to in the background instigates what she is going to draw on top of it. She has no intention of suggesting flesh tones for the figure. Fourlis simply explores the design of the body with lines and no interest in critique.
