CM: Dimosthenis Gallis' Nude #2 derives from the series entitled Corpus B.C. / A.D. Herewith appears with characteristic abstentiousness a male nude seated on a wooden chair. The black background is ideally suited to represent the void that embraces human existence. Gallis presents man delivered from anything material, resting from the weight of existence per se. The composition creates a poetical 'thread' beginning with the head on the hand, which itself rests on the foot on the chair.
The subject is photographed with the technique of double exposure. The photographer first took a picture of the empty chair on its own, and then - on the same frame - of the seated figure. The feeling of the figure's transparency and fluidity is juxtaposed to the chair's solid and monolithic form. Subsequently the photographer added the feeling of the figure's motion. Thus the artist plays with the fleeting impression of the permanent and the transient or of presence and absence and by extension of matter and spirit.
