CM: "Near trams and traffic policemen, beggars and merchants, pedlars and wandering saints, lives a hermit. A hermit who for forty years or more, except for sighs, has sprawled a voluntary captive between a tree's roots. Here, in the din of a main road as brightly ablaze with lamps as a toy-shop window, stand one of the many private shrines. The image of a holy man, made of sugary marble, and seated in the orthodox lotus position, is decked with the authentic beard and the long unshorn locks of an ascetic who has already migrated to Nirvana; and in his eye sockets rubies and crystal glitter."
