CM: "Naked yogis loiter inside an enclosure thick with votive stone slabs carved with interwined anthropomorphic or manyheaded serpents. There are little altars to Hanuman, the King of the monkeys and to Ganesh with his elephant's trunk daubed with red paint and speckled with white spots and flower petals. Others sit, serenely fixed in a spider's web which they spin and unravel from their entrails. Rotting peel, scraps and refuse are heaped in corners and along the top of low walls. These are the nests of rats and playing children. Nobody is purified in the nearby sea with its black square rocks the filthy but holy water of their temples is their only purification."
