CM: "Beyond, in swarming parts of the old town close to the Moslem, Jewish and Parsee quarters, in narrow lanes where crowds of the halt, the lame, and the blind drag themselves along, stands the ragged tent of Aphrodite Pandemos. The priestess sits waiting on her threshold. All around young catemites dressed in saris stand in ambush. In the long street and in the alleyways at dusk thousands of closely packed whores prink and preen beside their gaping doorways, combing their hair, cleaning their teeth, spitting, dying their palms red, fixing rings in their nostrils and sweeping their doorsteps."
