TX: raised on bronze at rear side in Greek <PRESENTED / to / ... / for / distinguished service / DEREE COLLEGE>
IL: Megakles Rogakos 2006, p.46-47
CM: In 1977 Ghika accepted a special commission from The American College of Greece to design and sculpt a medallion to award exceptional individuals for distinguished service to the College. As was the case with the Mythical Lovers, this medallion was cast from the preliminary model, which Ghika made of plasticine, about four times the size of the final medallion. The scene represents Spring personified by a woman resting before a shrine of Minoan order, against the backdrop of blooming nature that feels like expanding beyond the border of the medallion. Spring appears to be reading from the open book on her thighs, but she is clearly lost in deep contemplation. On the rear side of this medallion is inscribed the commissioned text, which reads "Presented / to / … / for / distinguished service / Deree College". Ghika was bold to revive the tradition of academic commission. The official medallion is free from conventionality, and invested with psyche, spirit, and soul.
