Charles Hustwick was born on 27 March 1950 at Shipley, West Yorkshire, England. He received a BA Hons in Fine Art and Museum Studies from the University of Leeds (1968-1972). Professor Sir Lawrence Gowing was Head of Department while he was at university, and was an important early influence. He made a study trip to Saint Petersburg and Moscow in 1971.

He also set the Stage Design for the following dance theatre productions: Oscar, Theatre of Motion, Swindon (1985); In the Ghetto, Ballet Rambert (1986); and Affinities, Laban Centre (1987).
