CM: The sketch on the label that adorns Stafylos: Asyrtiko Santorini derives from the first exhibition of Kryonidis at Erodos in Thessaloniki in 1988. This exhibition comprised of approximately two-hundred small artworks, which were exposed in various groups. In 1994 the Stafylos wine company commissioned Nikos Kryonidis to design the label for its first bottle of white wine. Kryonidis offered an abstract sketch that referenced Santorini Island in an indirect yet charming way. It was the first time that an abstract work of art was used as a label on a bottle, and this set the precedent for many a wine company. This design also led to the choice of a blue bottle, that was an avant-garde solution at the time.
