Leda Vardinoyiannis was born on 28 March 1928 in Athens, Greece, the daughter of Ioannis Katakouzinos (Mytilini 1888-1979) and Irene Koutlidis (Smyrna 1900-1930). She was a student at Pierce College, fondly remembering her teacher in English literature Koralia Krokodilou, and graduated in 1946. She continued her studies in French literature at the Pensionat Boufemont of France (1946-1947) and English and German literature at Pensionat Brillamon of Lausanne, Switzerland (1947-1948). In 1949 she returned to Greece to work in the family lumberman business of Koutlidis - Katakouzinos. Subsequently s he studied at the Vakalo School of Art & Design (1957-1960) art history with Eleni Vakalo, painting with Panagiotis Tetsis and engraving with Dimitris Mytaras. 1960 was the only time she took part in a group exhibition at Galerie Zygos at its location on Voukourestiou Street in Athens. She recognizes that social life, which she adored, left only little yet enough space for artistic creation.
