CM: Frosso Michalea wrote in November 1980: "I have given the name Turning Points to the wood sculptures and the name Transformations to the stone sculptures presented in this show. The works entitled Turning Points represent a new phase in my sculpture; they reflect my present involvement with a new set of values. The notion of 'turning point' first emerged in 1976, in a composition consisting of six sculptures made of limestone and designed for a school courtyard (Deree College Library atrium). My life had taken a more positive turn at that time, though I was still unable to clearly define the reasons for the change. I think I may now say that what led me to this new phase was a steadily progressive simplification of both my life and my way of expressing myself. The central idea in this phase was the awareness that I had lost my feeling of harmony and balance in my relationship to my own self and to other people, because our urban, industrial environment had alienated me from the fundamental values of life. Life in a large modern city had made me arrogant and arbitrary in my attitude to life and work, and deprived me of creative receptiveness. Moving away from the city to a new environment helped me to become reconciled with myself and to rediscover my lost values in the people who surrounded me, in the space I moved and lived in, in nature. I was able to create conditions that were conducive to a new, creative phase. The 'turning point' symbol materialized in a series of sculptures dominated by the concept of direction. Direction was determined by two basic axes. One of them had a perpendicular trend - elevation, ascension - and the other a horizontal one - extension, expansion of life. Volumes were gradually built around around either one or both of these dominant axial lines. Para llel and slanting planes reinforced the dominant trend. In certain stone Turning Points, the axial lines are not yet fully articulated. This is the embryonic stage of the 'turning point'; the volumes are still caught in a circular tendency, a closed circuit marked by a few hints at escape, at brea king out and away..."
