CM: "Winter Forest is drawn from the forest in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles, California, where I was taking photographs in the winter of 2003. I often use my photography as visual sketches and for the exhibition project Memory Verité I collected a variety of landscape images. They became my source material for drawings of geometric patterns reflecting on forms and colors found in nature. Winter Forest depicts a winter scene in a diagram of local colors, rhythms and shapes that I recorded at the San Gabriel Mountain forest with my camera. I like to use the diagram's spatial grid to abstract representation of a locality and to make notes of time's passing. The landscape of Winter Forest takes on the form of an abstract field of visuals and notations of sounds and movement. I call these visual fields 'maps'. The drawing Winter Forest (Map 1) is from the series called In the Museum of My Self that includes various watercolors, diagrams and photographs of landscapes and the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. The work explores the meaning of nature and reproduction, place, mediation and our recollection of reality in images."
