CM: This poster concerns Yannis Parmakelis' series of works entitled Martyrs and Victims and presents his bronze Head of 1971. The Martyrs and Victims are a homage to those people fighting for human justice and freedom. The series was created within the period of the dictatorship in Greece (1967-1974). The exhibition, which was launched at Athens Art Gallery on 27 May 1974, was charged by the political situation that led to the end of the seven-year dictatorship on 24 July 1974. Policing forces interogated Parmakelis about the role of the wreaths of nails on the recumbent heads of his sculpture. Parmakelis claims "The literary title Martyrs and Victims may reveal something of my intention, but the essence of the matter lies beyond the theme. It expresses these more profound emotions and situations with purely figurative means, in sculpture, line and color."
