Sir JOHN WILLIAM RAMSDEN (England 1831-1914 / act: Leeds)

Sir John William Ramsden Sir John William Ramsden, 5th Baronet of Longley and Byram lived from 1831 to 1914. He married Lady Helen Gwendolen, the daughter of the 13th Duke of Somerset. Member of Parliament for Taunton 1853 / 1857; Hythe 1857 / 1859; West Riding 1859 / 1865; and the Monmouthshire Boroughs from 1868. He also served in the following capacities: Honorary Colonel of the West Riding Volunteers; Justice of the Peace; Deputy Lieutenant for the West Riding and Monmouthshire; High Sheriff of the County of York 1868; and Under-Secretary of State for War 1857 / 1858. Sir John William restored Longley Old Hall in 1885. He also redeveloped much of the town centre of Huddersfield, particularly around the railway station.
