CM: This is the original clay version The Geyman Saint Francis, once displayed at the Geyman Home in Montecito, California. This type of Saint Francis emerged from the Saint Francis of Assisi with Birds that Rich was photographed working on at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1937. Here, Saint Francis appears to stand on what appears to be the peak of a mountain, turning his head towards the bird that did not survive - owing to the material's fragility - on his raised left hand. The bronze version, which is intact, reveals that the saint is in direct conversation with the bird perched with its wings spread over the forefinger of his left hand. One more bronze version was cast, which used to be part of the Rich Clifford Collection in Palm Desert, California.
