CM: The oil painting, Garden on Corfu, is based on a mixed media watercolor that Robinson completed while visiting the late 19th century gardens of the Achilleo Palace on the island of Corfu, in April 2003. The artist found the combination of statues, palm trees and the mountain in the distance compelling imagery. The morning light emphasized the shadows across the marble plaza and made the statues feel as if they could come to life. Combining both Greek and Italian influences and built by Queen Elisabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this gardern seems to capture a longing for the Mediterranean and its wonderful history of mythology.
