CM: George Tzannes has been inspired from the Kytherian landscape since the early 1970s, when this land was for him a new experience and a new subject to explore. Now, to paint a landscape of Kythera without an olive tree somewhere would be difficult. In Tzannes' art the olive tree has become an iconic symbol of Kytherean life. In the past the olive tree was as an occasional aside from the main subjects of his art, but eventually became the focus of his painting. In Goat and Olive Tree of 1979 Tzannes makes the tree itself appear like a portrait, as a case of visual transubstantiation.
