CN: VelN1927sd03

MT: graphite on paper (16x15)

TX: inscribed with pencil at lower middle of picture in Greek <Landscape of Hymmetus [sic] // nature>

PR: Nikos Velmos Collection, Athens

DN: Mr. Takis Efstathiou - 2006

CM:Though being inscribed "Landscape of Hymmetus" this drawing represents a stage-set by means of a picture-within-picture. On the foreground is the stage with the picture of the landscape as a backdrop in between the stage's posts. The landscape is a highly stylized rendering of Hymettus Mountain's beauties. In a symmetrical arrangement, a cypress is at the center and two shorter trees on either side are both flanked by bushes. The ground is rendered as a regular zig-zag evoking the earth's sloping surfaces, and sky is rendered as a regular spiral evoking clouds' movement by wind. This stage-set has not yet been correlated to any particular performance.
