ARTE1800inks

CN: ARTE1800inks

MT: limestone (2x15x10)

DN: Mr. Takis Efstathiou - 2006

LC: ACG Special Collections

CM: This inkplate seems to date from the later part of the Edo period (1600-1868), about 1800. It is quite a unique piece for its irregular shape and the decorative carving around the cavity for the ink. This item was used by a sumie calligrapher, in the typical Japanese style of applying ink with brush. The stone used for this plate is a black limestone originating in China.
