CM: This photograph captures a rear moment of archeological history; when Praxiteles' renowned sculptural complex Hermes carrying the Infant Dionysus was being discovered and unearthened in Situ, several meters under the ground in the cella of the temple of the temple of Hera at Olympia in A.D. 1877. The picture elloquently reveals how this masterpiece of Praxiteles, made from Parian marble and standing 210 cm in height, was found intact on its base, the earth still covering the part below Hermes' knees.
