SUSANNA COFFEY & SUZANNE WALTERS: RELATIVE DIVERSIONS

ART CENTER - 10/03/2006

On Friday, 10 March 2006, at 19:00, The American College of Greece will present a lecture by Susanna Coffey and Suzanne Walters, two American painters who currently live and work in New York. Megakles Rogakos, the College's Art Curator, will present the two artists.

The lecture titled Susanna Coffey & Suzanne Walters: Relative Diversions is presented at the College's Art Center, given the opportunity of the exhibition S+S showcasing the artists' recent work at the P37 Art Gallery. The two artists will give an illustrated talk about their art, with examples of their works that include the new addition to the ACG Art Collection. The exhibition and the lecture come under the auspices of the Embassy of the United States of America in Athens.

Megakles Rogakos, who has contributed the exhibition catalog essays writes: "Suzanna Coffey is known mainly for her portraiture. However, though her face is identifiably hers, the spectator would do well to see more than just that, since she paints beyond her identity, origin, and beliefs. In essence, she does not paint her self-portrait, but only uses her self as a model. In their 'painterliness' her works reveal their power of contrast between the background and foreground, accentuated by the expression of the face, which responds to its painted context." On Suzanne Walters, Megakles Rogakos writes: "Her works have the hallucinatory effect of dreams, in which the time/space continuum is annihilated. Though emitting a Disney-like feel, the protagonist figures in her art are original outcomes of her imagination. The mysterious and impressively exotic environment, owed to the rich color and the ample light on the gloss surface, reflects an eerie feeling of anthropomorphic ambiguity."

Suzanna Coffey (Master of Fine Arts Yale School of Art 1982) is a significant painter with a long series of personal exhibitions in the top galleries of the United States (Tibor de Nagy of New York, Alpha Gallery of Boston, Maya Polski Gallery of Chicago) and of Europe. She is also a professor at the Art Institute of Chicago. Works of Suzanna Coffey are kept at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Minneapolis Museum of Art, the Joan Flash Collection, and elsewhere.

Suzanne Walters, with an MFA from the San Francisco Institute and scholarships from the leading art institutions in the United States, is a promising artist. She has had several personal exhibitions, and is represented by Caren Golden Fine Art of New York, and Hiestand Galleries of Miami. Her works are included in the catalogs of The CUE Art Foundation, The Joan Mitchell Foundation, New American Paintings, and Artists to Artists.

The lectures by the artists will be conducted in English. Following the event, beverages will be served.

Afterward, those who wish to stay on, may purchase tickets to a Concert of Chamber Music with works by Mozart, which will begin at 20:30 at the Pierce College Theater.
